This verse powerfully highlights how prosperity, even when a direct gift from God's goodness, can lead to a dangerous complacency and a forgetting of the Giver. The Hebrew word used for "delighted themselves" carries a sense of luxuriating or indulging to excess, subtly hinting at how easily blessings can become traps when we stop attributing them to God's grace.
And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

Imagine inheriting a dream home, complete with a stocked pantry, beautiful landscaping, and a ready-to-go garden. This verse describes the Israelites stepping into just such a scenario.
A Land Overflowing
The Israelites didn't just conquer a land; they took possession of a land that was already rich and fully developed.
This wasn't a barren wilderness they had to tame, but a land overflowing with goodness, a testament to God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to Abraham.
When life gets comfortable, it's easy to stop striving and start sinking. This verse warns of a subtle spiritual danger that arises from excessive ease.
When Blessings Lead to Laziness
Ask a follow-up
The Israelites, having received so much, experienced physical satisfaction ('ate and were filled') and prosperity ('became fat'). This prosperity, however, led to a dangerous state of complacency.
This is the cycle: God blesses, people enjoy, and then they forget the source of their blessings, becoming less reliant on Him and more on their comfort. This often precedes turning away from God's ways.
