and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day. And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on dry land, and you cast their pursuers into the depths, as a stone into mighty waters.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse is part of a long, profound prayer of confession and remembrance offered by the Levites and the people of Israel. They are recounting God's faithfulness and their own history of unfaithfulness, highlighting specific acts of God's power, like the Exodus from Egypt. This memory of God's mighty deeds serves as a foundation for their present confession and plea for mercy.
Why does God's Word highlight that He 'made a name for Himself' through the plagues in Egypt? It wasn't just about punishment; it was about revelation.
When Nehemiah and the people recount God's mighty acts, they emphasize that the signs and wonders in Egypt served to make God's name known. This wasn't arbitrary destruction. The plagues were a direct response to the Egyptians' arrogance and mistreatment of God's people.
Revealing Character
God used these powerful events to reveal His character: His power over all other gods, His justice against oppression, and His steadfast commitment to His promises. The Egyptians' pride was met with divine judgment, demonstrating that God would not tolerate such defiance.
Lasting Legacy
The text stresses that this 'making of a name' was not a fleeting moment. It had a lasting impact, as acknowledged by the people 'to this day.' This means the memory and significance of God's deliverance continued to shape their identity and faith through generations.
What does it mean for a people to 'act arrogantly' against God's chosen people, and why does God notice?
The passage points to the specific sin of the Egyptians: they 'acted arrogantly against our fathers.' This wasn't just simple mistreatment; it was a deep-seated pride that scorned and despised God's people, treating them like slaves.
Pride's Fatal Flaw
Ask a follow-up
Scripture consistently warns against pride. It's not merely self-confidence, but an overweening self-importance that often leads to looking down on others and defying divine authority. The Egyptians' pride blinded them to God's power and His people's status as His own.
God's Awareness
Crucially, the verse states that God knew they acted arrogantly. God is intimately aware of the pride and contempt shown towards His people and His own name. This knowledge isn't passive; it leads to divine action to correct and judge such defiance.
