Why fast and mourn right after a week of joyful celebration?
The people of Israel had just finished the Feast of Tabernacles, a time of great joy and remembrance. But the joy didn't last forever. The text tells us that on the twenty-fourth day of the month, after the feast ended, they gathered for a solemn fast.
This wasn't accidental timing. The week of feasting had stirred something deep within them. Reading the Law, as we saw just before this, had awakened their consciences to their sin. But during the festival, outward displays of sorrow were out of place. So, they waited for the joyous occasion to pass.
This shows us that true repentance isn't about suppressing conviction. It's about honoring it at the right time. They allowed themselves the joy of the feast, but then they dedicated themselves to facing their sin head-on when the time was right.
