The people gathering "as one man" highlights their remarkable unity and shared purpose, not just their sheer numbers. Their immediate request to Ezra for the Book of the Law shows a deep, collective longing to reconnect with God's commands after years of neglect, signaling a turning point for their community.
And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.
English Standard Version (ESV)
After Nehemiah oversaw the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, the people of Israel gathered in unity in a public square. They urgently requested Ezra, the scribe, to bring forth the Book of Moses' Law, indicating a deep desire to reconnect with God's commands after their rebuilding efforts. Imagine the scene: after years of struggle and rebuilding, the people of Jerusalem come together. What does this singular unity signify for this post-exilic community?
The verse opens with a powerful image of unity: 'all the people gathered themselves together as one man.' This isn't just a large crowd; it's a community acting with a single purpose. After the immense effort of rebuilding the walls under Nehemiah, this spontaneous, unified gathering highlights a deep spiritual hunger. It shows a people who, having secured their physical safety, are now intensely focused on their spiritual identity and relationship with God. This 'remnant' is not just surviving; they are actively seeking to thrive in obedience to God's commands.
Why would the people, after completing such a monumental task as rebuilding the city walls, immediately request the Law? What does this reveal about their priorities?
The immediate request to Ezra to bring the 'Book of the Law of Moses' reveals a profound shift in the people's hearts. The completion of the walls provided security, but this gathering shows their ultimate desire was for spiritual security and guidance. They weren't just curious; they asked for the Law. This highlights a newfound reverence and eagerness to understand God's commands, moving from mere observance to a desire for internal transformation through God's Word. It’s a testament to their hunger for God's truth as the foundation for their renewed community.

Ezra, a scribe learned in the Law, is specifically called upon. What role did he play in making God's Word accessible and impactful?
Ezra the scribe emerges as the crucial figure to unlock the Law for the people. His expertise meant he didn't just have the Law; he could explain it. The commentaries suggest that Ezra had previously taught the people, and they remembered his ability to expound God's Word. This indicates that simply possessing the Law wasn't enough; it needed faithful interpreters who could unpack its meaning and apply it to their lives.
