Nehemiah 5:10-12

What does Nehemiah 5:10-12 mean?

Nehemiah confesses that he, his brothers, and his servants also could have been exacting interest, revealing that the issue wasn't just greedy individuals, but a whole system of financial practice he was a part of. He’s not just pointing fingers; he's owning his own complicity and inviting others to change with him. This moment shows a leader taking responsibility for his community's sin, not just condemning it from afar.

Moreover, I and my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Let us abandon this exacting of interest. Return to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the percentage of money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them.” Then they said, “We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say.” And I called the priests and made them swear to do as they had promised.

English Standard Version (ESV)

What Nehemiah 5:10-12 means

The people are suffering under heavy debt and taxes, with the wealthy exploiting their countrymen by seizing land and children as collateral. Nehemiah, upon hearing their cries, confronts the nobles and officials who are engaging in this oppressive practice. In this verse, Nehemiah includes himself and his own household, acknowledging that they too had the legal right to lend money and grain with interest, but urges them all to abandon this harmful custom.

Sharing the Guilt, Sharing the Solution

Nehemiah confronts a serious issue of oppression. But instead of just pointing fingers, he draws himself and his closest allies into the problem.

Nehemiah's approach is remarkable. He doesn't just condemn others; he confesses that he, his brothers, and his servants have also been lending money and grain, presumably with interest.

A United Front Against Injustice

Shared Responsibility: Nehemiah includes himself and his inner circle in the practice he wants to stop. This isn't about saying he was as bad as the worst oppressors, but acknowledging that the system allowed for it and he was part of it.
Disarming Criticism: By admitting his own involvement, Nehemiah disarms potential criticism. He can't be accused of demanding something he himself isn't willing to do.
Modeling the Change: His willingness to abandon exacting interest sets the standard. He's not just asking others to change; he's showing them how to change by leading the way.

From Exacting Interest to Remitting Loans

The problem isn't just charging interest; it's the whole system of financial exploitation that harms the vulnerable.

The specific phrase 'exacting of interest' points to a deeper issue than just a fair rate. In ancient Israelite law, charging interest to fellow Israelites was often prohibited or heavily restricted, especially if it led to the poor losing their security or even their freedom.
