Ever felt so overwhelmed by a problem that you couldn't even start? Nehemiah's people were facing a similar dread, with enemies closing in.
When Opposition Rises
Nehemiah's people were in the middle of a massive rebuilding project – literally, rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. But their enemies, Sanballat and Tobiah, were absolutely furious. They gathered their forces, plotting to attack and disrupt the work (Nehemiah 4:7-8). It’s easy to imagine the panic! When the enemy forces were spotted, a wave of fear must have washed over the builders. They weren't professional soldiers, and the threat was real and imminent.
Nehemiah's Bold Stand
Nehemiah, their leader, didn't ignore the fear. He looked – he took it all in, seeing the danger. But instead of succumbing, he rose up. This wasn't just a physical movement; it was a courageous declaration. He addressed everyone, from the top leaders to the common people. His first command? 'Do not be afraid of them.' This is the initial, powerful step: acknowledging the fear but refusing to let it paralyze them.
