The "rubbish" wasn't just physical debris; it also represented the overwhelming weight of fatigue and fear that had built up, making the task feel insurmountable. This verse reveals that sometimes the greatest opposition to God's work comes not just from external enemies, but from within the weary hearts of His own people.
In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.” And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.” At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
As the builders worked tirelessly, facing constant threats from surrounding enemies like Sanballat and Tobiah, a wave of weariness and doubt began to spread among the people of Judah. The sheer amount of rubble from the destroyed wall, combined with the demanding labor and the ongoing fear, had taken its toll, leading to a declaration of despair that the work was too great and their strength was failing. This cry of exhaustion and near defeat sets the stage for Nehemiah's crucial leadership response in the face of internal discouragement.

Opposition and Exhaustion
As Nehemiah and the Jews work tirelessly to rebuild the wall, they face intense opposition from surrounding peoples like Sanballat the Horonite. The sheer volume of rubble and the constant labor begin to wear down the workers, leading to demoralized complaints like the one in Nehemiah 4:10.
This passage echoes the same sense of overwhelming difficulty and despair, where the Israelites felt their strength failing against oppressive enemies and economic hardship, much like the workers in Nehemiah facing rubble and threats.
Galatians 6:9Paul's encouragement to not grow weary in doing good parallels the builders' struggle; it reminds us that persistent effort in God's work, even when facing fatigue and overwhelming tasks, has a divine reward.
Exodus 5:10-14This passage highlights a similar situation where laborers, burdened by increased demands and unfinished tasks (like the rubble), felt their strength failing and their spirits crushed, leading to complaints against their leaders.
Psalm 127:1The psalm's assertion that without the Lord, builders labor in vain directly speaks to the futility the people felt in Nehemiah 4:10; it underscores that human strength and effort alone are insufficient for God's purposes.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9This passage offers a profound parallel to the feeling of being hard-pressed on every side, perplexed, struck down, yet not destroyed, capturing the spirit of weariness and discouragement faced by Nehemiah's workers despite their ongoing commitment.

Verse 10. - The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed. The complaint seems to be, that by the drawing off of men from the working parties to act as guards, those parties were so weakened that they could not continue the work, the quantity of rubbish being so great.
