Ever wondered when the Sabbath officially starts? It’s not quite midnight or sunrise. Nehemiah’s actions show us the practical application of an ancient principle.
The Jewish understanding of a day, rooted in creation, runs from sunset to sunset. Nehemiah demonstrates this by acting before full darkness, as dusk approached, to prepare for the Sabbath.
From Evening to Evening
Genesis 1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31 sets the pattern: "the evening and the morning were the first day." This established a day’s boundary from dusk to dusk. Leviticus 23:32 reinforces this for the Day of Atonement: "From evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath."
Nehemiah’s timing is precise. He didn't wait for nightfall but acted as the light faded and shadows lengthened. This proactive closing of the gates ensured that no commerce or work would spill into the sacred hours.
