Nehemiah 13:10-14

What does Nehemiah 13:10-14 mean?

This verse reveals a heartbreaking truth: when God's people neglect to provide for those who serve Him, the service itself grinds to a halt. The Levites and singers weren't just absent; they were forced to abandon their sacred calling to the fields simply to survive.

I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field. So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.

What Nehemiah 13:10-14 means

Nehemiah has just returned from his mission to Persia and is shocked to find that during his absence, the corrupt high priest Eliashib has allowed foreign influence and abuses to creep back into Jerusalem. After addressing the desecration of the temple chambers, Nehemiah discovers that the Levites and singers, who were supposed to be dedicated to worship, have abandoned their posts. They were forced to leave the Temple and return to their fields to earn a living because their promised portions, likely tithes, were no longer being provided to them.

The Levites' Forgotten Support

Imagine pouring your life into serving God, only to find your basic needs unmet. This was the reality for the Levites and singers in Nehemiah’s day.

The Levites and singers were God's appointed ministers, responsible for the daily operations and worship in the Temple. Their livelihood was meant to come from the people's tithes and offerings, as established by God's law and reaffirmed in the covenant Nehemiah's people had just made.

A Breakdown in Giving

When Nehemiah returned, he discovered this vital system had collapsed. The portions designated for the Levites – their rightful income – had not been given. This wasn't just a financial oversight; it was a spiritual failure. It meant those dedicated to serving God were forced to abandon their posts.

The Consequence: Abandonment

The direct result was that the Levites and singers, the very ones 'who did the work,' had 'fled each to his field.' They had to leave the Temple and return to their ancestral lands to provide for themselves through farming. This left the house of God neglected and the sacred worship disrupted.

Leaders' Failure, People's Suffering

Who was responsible when the music stopped and the Temple services faltered? The answer points to a failure at the top.

Nehemiah's investigation reveals a leadership vacuum and corruption. The 'rulers' and the high priest, Eliashib, were either withholding the Levites' portions for their own gain or allowing such mismanagement that the people stopped contributing.
