When those who serve God are not cared for, the work itself suffers. Nehemiah discovered a critical breakdown in worship, and the reason was surprisingly practical.
The Levites' Essential Role
The Levites and singers were the dedicated staff of the Temple. Their job wasn't just singing songs; it was the administration and maintenance of worship, the core of Israel's spiritual life.
The Supply Chain Broken
In ancient Israel, the Levites were to be supported by the people's tithes and offerings, as outlined in the Law (Numbers 18:21-24). This wasn't optional charity; it was the financial structure God Himself established to keep His house and its ministry functioning.
The Consequence: Abandonment
When these provisions were withheld, the Levites and singers, who depended on them, couldn't continue their service. They were forced to leave the Temple and return to their ancestral fields to earn a living. This verse paints a stark picture of a once-vibrant center of worship left empty because the people (and likely corrupt leaders) failed to provide for those who did the work. The house of God was, in effect, forsaken.
