Nehemiah 11:31-36
This page isn't yet indexed by search engines.
While listing towns, the text reveals how the tribe of Benjamin, once famously associated with places like Gibeah (often linked to Geba here), now spread out to reclaim territories stretching northwards, showing a restoration of their ancestral lands beyond just the immediate vicinity of Jerusalem. This wasn't just a symbolic return, but a physical re-inhabitation of key strongholds and villages across their historical region.
The people of Benjamin also lived from Geba onward, at Michmash, Aija, Bethel and its villages, Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah, Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim, Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat, Lod, and Ono, the valley of craftsmen. And certain divisions of the Levites in Judah were assigned to Benjamin.
English Standard Version (ESV)
This passage is part of Nehemiah's census to repopulate Jerusalem and the surrounding towns. After listing those who returned to Jerusalem by lot, this verse, and those immediately following, detail where the descendants of Benjamin settled in their ancestral lands. These settlements, including Geba, Michmash, and Bethel, mark the tribal boundaries and the continuing presence of Benjamin's people in the region after the Babylonian exile.
Ever wonder what 'home' meant for the tribe of Benjamin after the exile? This verse paints a picture of their ancestral lands.
Nehemiah 11:31 describes the geographical boundaries of Benjamin's territory after their return from exile. The text specifically mentions they lived 'from Geba onward, at Michmash.' This suggests a continuous settlement pattern. Geba was likely a significant town on the southern edge of Benjamin's territory, while Michmash was further north. The inclusion of other villages like Aija and Bethel further solidifies their claim to this ancestral homeland. This wasn't just a random settlement; it was a re-establishment in lands deeply connected to their identity and history.
It's easy to focus on the big cities, but what do these 'villages' tell us about the people of Benjamin?
The verse doesn't just list towns; it includes 'and its villages.' This detail is crucial. It highlights that the tribe of Benjamin's presence wasn't confined to major urban centers but extended into the surrounding rural areas. These villages were integral to their community and livelihood. For the returning exiles, re-inhabiting these places, both towns and their associated villages, was a way of reclaiming their heritage and rebuilding their collective identity. It signifies a complete re-establishment, not just in key locations, but across the breadth of their assigned territory.
