Nehemiah 10:38-39

What does Nehemiah 10:38-39 mean?

This verse highlights a fascinating detail: a priest isn't just passively receiving, but actively present with the Levites as tithes are collected. This wasn't just about oversight; it was a partnership to ensure honesty and right relationship within God's service, showing that even in administrative tasks, accountability and mutual respect are vital.

And the priest, the son of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes. And the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse. For the people of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the contribution of grain, wine, and oil to the chambers, where the vessels of the sanctuary are, as well as the priests who minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers. We will not neglect the house of our God.”

What Nehemiah 10:38-39 means

Following their solemn covenant to uphold God's law and support the Temple, the people make specific arrangements for the collection and distribution of tithes. This verse details a crucial step: a priest's presence ensures the Levites correctly gather their portion, and the Levites, in turn, are obligated to set aside and transport a tenth of what they receive—the "tithe of the tithes"—to the Temple storehouses for the priests. This administrative detail underscores their commitment to proper worship and the support of those serving God.

The "Tithe of Tithes" - A Sacred Trust

Ever wondered how the complex system of giving in ancient Israel worked? It involved layers of responsibility and accountability, ensuring everyone received their rightful share.

Nehemiah 10:38 describes a specific arrangement for the tithes given by the people.

Layers of Giving

First Tithe: The people brought tithes from their produce to the Levites. This was their way of supporting the Levitical tribe, who served in the tabernacle and temple.
Tithe of Tithes: From the tithes they received, the Levites were then required to set aside a tenth part for the priests. This 'tithe of the tithes' was the priests' portion, as they were descendants of Aaron and directly served in the sanctuary.

This layered giving system, detailed in Numbers 18, highlights God's design for supporting His ministry and ensuring fair distribution. It wasn't just about giving; it was about a structured, accountable system.
