let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned.

Nehemiah isn't just speaking to God; he's drawing God's attention. What does it mean to ask God to open His eyes and ears to prayer?
In Nehemiah 1:6, we see Nehemiah's profound earnestness. He asks God to be 'attentive' and have His 'eyes open.' This isn't about God needing to be reminded or awakened; He is eternally watchful and aware.
Instead, this language reflects a deep respect for God's sovereignty and a heartfelt plea for His focused attention on the situation. Nehemiah is asking God to look with compassion and listen with favor on the prayers being offered. It's an invitation for God to engage actively with His people's plight, acknowledging His power and their dependence on Him. It’s the prayer of a servant who knows his Master can see and hear everything, and who desperately wants that divine gaze and attention directed toward rescue and restoration.
Nehemiah's prayer isn't a quick one-off; it's a sustained cry. What does 'day and night' prayer reveal about his heart?
The phrase 'day and night' in verse 6 highlights the incredible persistence and depth of Nehemiah's prayer. This wasn't just a passing concern; it was an ongoing, consuming burden.
