Micah calls out specific kings from Israel's past – Omri and Ahab. Why these particular figures, and what does 'walking in their counsels' truly mean for God's people?
Micah doesn't just point to general wrongdoing; he names names. Omri and Ahab represent the absolute nadir of Israelite history, known for their deep dives into Baal worship and ruthless oppression.
The Legacy of Omri and Ahab
- Omri: Though not as infamous as Ahab in the biblical text, Omri is noted for doing 'evil in the sight of the Lord' and for establishing Samaria as a capital, further entrenching idolatry. His name became so synonymous with the northern kingdom that the Assyrians called it 'Bit Omri' (House of Omri).
- Ahab: Omri's son, Ahab, escalated the corruption. He married Jezebel, embraced Baal worship wholeheartedly, persecuted prophets, and engaged in injustice, most notably the seizure of Naboth's vineyard.
