Matthew 9:12-13

Jesus flips the Pharisees' own self-perception right back at them. He's not just saying sick people need doctors; he's pointing out that if the Pharisees truly believe they are healthy and righteous, then they have no need for His specific healing, effectively excluding themselves from His ministry by their own definition. This highlights that recognizing one's own sickness is the first step to receiving spiritual healing.
But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just been criticized by the Pharisees for eating with "sinners and tax collectors." In response, Jesus quotes a common proverb to explain his mission: just as healthy people don't need a doctor, the "righteous" (as the Pharisees saw themselves) didn't need his spiritual healing. His purpose, he implies, is to call and heal those who recognize their sickness – the sinners and tax collectors he's with.
Jesus uses a common saying to explain His mission. But what does this proverb reveal about how we see ourselves spiritually?
Jesus responds to the Pharisees' criticism of Him eating with sinners by employing a well-known proverb: 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.' He's not just making a clever comeback; He's revealing a fundamental truth about His purpose.
The Pharisees thought they were healthy, but Jesus saw something else entirely. What's the biggest spiritual disease, and why is it so dangerous?
The Pharisees were offended that Jesus associated with 'sinners.' They saw themselves as righteous and spiritually 'well.' Jesus takes them at their word, using their own self-assessment to show why they didn't need Him.
