Why did Jesus hang out with the 'wrong crowd'? Was it just a coincidence, or a deliberate mission?
Jesus uses a common proverb to explain his purpose:
The Physician's Place
A physician's job isn't to hang out with healthy people; it's to help those who are sick. Jesus applied this to himself. He heard the Pharisees criticizing him for eating with tax collectors and sinners. Instead of getting defensive, he calmly stated that the 'well' don't need a doctor, but the 'sick' do. This wasn't an accident; it was his mission. He came to seek and save the lost, and those who recognize their spiritual sickness are the ones he came to heal.
A Divine Diagnosis
The Pharisees saw themselves as spiritually healthy, perfectly fine in God's eyes. Jesus, however, saw them differently. He knew their pride and self-righteousness were actually the deepest sickness. By associating with those considered outcasts, Jesus was demonstrating that his ministry was specifically for those who knew they needed healing, not for those who thought they were already whole.
