Did Jesus come to tear down the Old Testament Law or build upon it? The answer might surprise you.
Jesus makes a powerful statement right at the start of his Sermon on the Mount: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them."
Think about what that means. The "Law and the Prophets" was the Jewish way of referring to their entire collection of sacred writings – what we call the Old Testament. Jesus isn't saying he's here to get rid of it all, like throwing out an old rulebook. Instead, he's saying his purpose is to fulfill it.
What does "fulfill" mean here? It's not just about following the rules perfectly (though he certainly did that!). It means bringing the Law and the Prophets to their ultimate intended meaning and purpose. It's about completing what God intended all along through those scriptures. It’s like a master artist completing a sketch – the original lines are still there, but the artist adds depth, color, and brings the vision to its full realization.
