Matthew 4:18-22

What does Matthew 4:18-22 mean?

This encounter highlights that Jesus didn't seek out the learned or powerful, but chose ordinary fishermen to show that his kingdom's power comes from God, not human status. Their simple profession is emphasized not as a sign of deficiency, but as a testament to God's ability to use anyone for His grand purposes, ensuring all glory goes to Him.

While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

What Matthew 4:18-22 means

Jesus, beginning his public ministry in Galilee after leaving Nazareth, walks along the Sea of Galilee where he encounters two brothers, Simon (later called Peter) and Andrew, actively engaged in their fishing trade. This encounter isn't the first time these men have met Jesus; earlier interactions recorded in John's Gospel suggest they had already been introduced and followed him for a time. However, they had returned to their familiar work, and now Jesus calls them to a constant discipleship and an entirely new occupation.
