English Standard Version (ESV)
After being rejected by his hometown of Nazareth, Jesus relocated his ministry base to Capernaum, a bustling town situated by the Sea of Galilee in a region historically significant for the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali. This move marks a shift in his public activity, from his upbringing in Nazareth to a more central, populated area where he would perform many miracles and teach extensively.
Jesus leaves his hometown after a harsh rejection. Why pick Capernaum? It wasn't just a random move; it was a strategic choice.
A Deliberate Relocation
Jesus' departure from Nazareth wasn't a retreat, but a strategic relocation. After being rejected and nearly harmed by his own townspeople (Luke 4:16-30), he moved his base of operations to Capernaum.
Why Capernaum?
Capernaum wasn't just any town; it was 'by the sea.' This detail is more than just geography – it points to a ministry reaching diverse people.
