Judas delivered Jesus into the hands of his enemies. But when he saw the inevitable outcome—condemnation—something shifted within him. What did he truly expect to happen?
Matthew 27:3 tells us, 'Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver.'
An Unexpected Outcome?
Many scholars believe Judas didn't anticipate Jesus actually being condemned to death. He might have expected Jesus to powerfully deliver Himself, perhaps ushering in the Kingdom in a dramatic, world-altering way that would vindicate both of them. His betrayal might have been motivated by a misguided hope that this crisis would force Jesus' hand.
When that hope died and condemnation became a certainty, Judas was crushed by the reality of his actions. The thirty pieces of silver, once a prize, became a symbol of his terrible mistake.
