Jesus was silent for a long time during his trial, but when directly asked by the High Priest, His response was earth-shattering. Why the silence, and why the sudden, bold declaration?
The trial of Jesus before Caiaphas was a sham. False witnesses had already testified, and the situation was designed to trap Jesus.
The Pregnant Pause
For a significant period, Jesus remained silent (Matthew 26:62-63). This silence wasn't an admission of guilt or weakness. It was a deliberate strategic pause, waiting for the right moment and the right question. The religious leaders had tried to twist His words and actions, but they couldn't find a capital offense. When Caiaphas, the High Priest, adjured Jesus by the living God to state whether He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus seized this divinely appointed moment.
An Affirmation and an Escalation
Jesus's opening phrase, "You have said so," is a powerful affirmation. It echoes Caiaphas's implied accusation – that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. But Jesus doesn't stop there. He escalates His claim, moving from the earthly accusation to a heavenly declaration of His ultimate authority.
