The seemingly simple phrase "while they went to buy" highlights that the foolish virgins were in the process of trying to fix their mistake, but their action came too late because the Bridegroom's arrival was simultaneous with their departure, making their effort futile. It underscores that genuine readiness isn't about scrambling when the crisis hits, but about consistent preparation that precedes the moment of need.
And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse marks the climactic moment in Jesus' parable about the ten virgins. While the five foolish virgins desperately try to purchase oil for their lamps, the bridegroom arrives unexpectedly. The five wise virgins, who had wisely prepared by bringing extra oil, are welcomed into the wedding feast with him.
The parable of the virgins is often about having enough oil. But what does it really mean to be ready when the Bridegroom arrives?
The ten virgins all intended to meet the Bridegroom. They all took lamps, symbolizing a profession of faith or outward religious practice. However, only five were truly ready.
The Crucial Difference
Being 'ready' isn't just about intending to go; it's about possessing the vital substance that allows you to enter and remain in God's presence.
The image of a shut door is stark and final. What does this closing signify, and why is it so critical?
The parable powerfully illustrates that there's a point of no return. When the Bridegroom arrives, the 'door was shut.' This isn't just about missing out on a party; it's about the eternal destiny of souls.
