Jesus delivers a chilling prediction: not one stone will be left upon another. How literally was this fulfilled?
Jesus’s words, 'There shall not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down,' were not a mere metaphor for significant damage. Historical accounts, particularly from Josephus, reveal an almost literal fulfillment of this prophecy. After the Roman siege in 70 AD, the command was given to raze the city and the Temple to the ground. The foundations were dug up, and the ground was even plowed over, fulfilling another prophecy (Micah 3:12) that Zion would be plowed like a field.
This wasn’t just the work of war; it was a judgment from God. While Roman generals may have had strategic reasons or even expressed a desire to preserve parts of the structure, the ultimate outcome was complete demolition. This utter destruction served as a stark sign of God’s judgment on a nation that had rejected His Son.
