Matthew 23:34-37

What does Matthew 23:34-37 mean?

Jesus declares that He will send messengers – prophets, wise ones, and scribes – but these religious leaders will persecute them, revealing their deep-seated opposition to God's truth, not just their fathers' past actions. This highlights that their rejection of God's messengers isn't just historical; it's an ongoing, active defiance against the present word of God.

Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

What Matthew 23:34-37 means

Jesus has just delivered a series of "woes" against the scribes and Pharisees, condemning their hypocrisy and guilt in rejecting God's messengers throughout history. Now, He declares that this pattern of rejection and violence will continue, as He will send them more prophets, wise people, and teachers, whom they will persecute and even kill. This sets the stage for His lament over Jerusalem and the prophecy of its destruction, directly linking their future suffering to their persistent rejection of divine truth and messengers.

God's Persistent Sending, Humanity's Persistent Rejection

Jesus declares He will send more messengers, but He already knows they will be met with violence. How can God send knowing the outcome?

Jesus, speaking as the very Wisdom of God, declares His intention to send more prophets, wise men, and scribes to the religious leaders. This isn't a naive hope; it's a deliberate act in the face of their predictable hostility.

A Pattern of Persecution

This act highlights a tragic, recurring pattern: God consistently sends His messengers, and humanity, particularly those in positions of authority, consistently rejects and persecutes them. This verse points to the apostles and early church leaders who would face similar opposition.

Divine Purpose in Foreknowledge

Jesus's foreknowledge of their actions doesn't negate their responsibility. Instead, it underscores the depth of their rebellion. God's sending is not futile; it serves to make their rejection more inexcusable and to bring their guilt to its fullest measure.

The Weight of Rejected Messengers

Why does Jesus list specific ways these messengers will be treated? What is the cumulative effect of this relentless persecution?

The verse details brutal forms of rejection: killing, crucifying, scourging in synagogues, and persecuting from town to town. These aren't random acts of violence; they are systematic attempts to silence God's voice and people.
