Jesus doesn't just call out their hypocrisy; he declares they are partners in the very sins they condemn. How can that be?
Jesus' response is sharp and direct: 'You testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.' (Matthew 23:31, adapted). The Pharisees claimed they would not have participated in shedding the prophets' blood, but Jesus flips it.
A Cycle of Rejection
Their condemnation of their fathers' actions didn't absolve them; it actually marked them as belonging to the same lineage of opposition to God's messengers. By rejecting the living prophets (and Jesus himself), they were, in effect, completing the work their fathers started. They were continuing the same spirit of rebellion and violence.
Filling Up the Measure
Jesus goes on to say they are 'filling up the measure of your fathers' (Matthew 23:32). This isn't just about repeating history; it's about escalating it. Their ancestors shed prophetic blood, but this generation, Jesus implies, will surpass them in their rejection and violence by crucifying the very Son of God. Their boast of not being like their fathers actually proves they are just like them, and even worse.
