Jesus calls them "fools" and "blind" not just because they're missing the point, but because their twisted logic—prioritizing the gold over the Temple—is fundamentally absurd, ignoring that the gold only has sacredness because the Temple makes it so. This reveals their deeper problem: they value material wealth and their own traditions more than God's presence and the true sanctity He imparts.
You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus is exposing the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, calling them "blind guides" who twist God's law for personal gain. He accuses them of prioritizing trivial matters and making distinctions that devalue the sacredness of God's presence and worship. This leads directly into His sharp rebuke about their false teaching on oaths, where they create loopholes concerning the temple and its gold.
The Pharisees had a twisted logic about oaths, valuing the temple's gold over the temple itself. Jesus calls them out for this absurdity.
Jesus exposes a fundamental error in the Pharisees' thinking: they’d reversed the source of sacredness. They believed swearing by the temple’s gold made an oath more binding than swearing by the temple itself.
Why were the Pharisees so obsessed with these twisted rules about oaths? Jesus hints at the real motivation behind their 'wisdom'.
Jesus doesn't just correct a logical error; he exposes the hypocrisy and greed driving the Pharisees' convoluted teachings about oaths.

Jesus' sharp rebuke of the religious leaders in Matthew 23:17 highlights the absurdity of their man-made distinctions. They were prioritizing oaths sworn by the temple's gold over oaths sworn by the Temple itself, missing the point that the Temple's sacredness derived from God's presence within it. This occurred during the period of Herod's ambitious, yet ultimately doomed, reconstruction of the Second Temple, a magnificent edifice that would soon be destroyed, underscoring the transient nature of human constructions compared to God's eternal presence and authority.
