Everyone knew the Messiah would be a descendant of King David. But what did that really mean for the people expecting him?
Jesus poses a seemingly simple question to the Pharisees: 'Whose son is the Christ?' Their immediate, confident answer, 'The son of David,' reflects a deeply ingrained belief. For centuries, the prophets had foretold that the promised Messiah would come from David's royal line. This connection to David, Israel's greatest king, fueled expectations of a powerful earthly ruler who would restore the nation. It was a common understanding, a foundational piece of messianic hope that provided a tangible link to God's promises.
However, this widely accepted truth also held a hidden limitation. The Pharisees, focused on the human lineage, were missing a crucial part of the picture. Their understanding was rooted in the 'son of David' identity, an earthly and political expectation, rather than fully grasping the divine nature and authority of the Messiah.
Jesus uses a Psalm to turn the Pharisees' simple answer into a profound and unanswerable puzzle. How can a descendant also be the ancestor's Lord?
Jesus doesn't stop at their answer. He immediately follows up with a rhetorical question that exposes the limitation of their understanding: 'How then does David in the Spirit call him Lord?' (Matthew 22:43). He's quoting Psalm 110:1, a passage universally acknowledged as messianic. This Psalm states, 'The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.”'
This creates a paradox for the Pharisees. If the Messiah is merely the 'son of David,' how can David himself, a king under God, call this future descendant 'Lord'? David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, recognized a divine authority in the Messiah that transcended earthly kingship. Jesus is pointing out that their understanding of the Christ as only a human descendant of David misses the Messiah's divine nature and supreme authority.
