Matthew 22:23-33

What does Matthew 22:23-33 mean?

The Sadducees didn't just deny the resurrection of the body; their denial extended to the very idea of spirits or angels existing, effectively rejecting any form of life after death and the soul's continued existence. This means their question wasn't merely about a tricky scenario, but a fundamental attack on the entire concept of a spiritual realm and afterlife.

The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. So too the second and third, down to the seventh. After them all, the woman died. In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.” But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God: ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

What Matthew 22:23-33 means

Jesus has just dealt with the Pharisees and Herodians on the tricky question of paying taxes to Caesar, and now, on the same day, a different religious group, the Sadducees, steps forward. These Sadducees held a very different belief system from the Pharisees, most notably denying the resurrection of the dead, angels, and spirits, and they present Jesus with a hypothetical scenario based on the Mosaic Law to trap him into contradicting himself. Their aim is to expose what they see as the absurdity of believing in a future resurrection, especially when contrasted with established earthly laws.

A Sect Defined by Denial

Imagine a group so convinced in their beliefs that they actively seek to trip up the truth. That was the Sadducees.

The Sadducees were a prominent religious sect in Jesus' day, but their distinctiveness came from what they denied. Unlike the Pharisees, they rejected the idea of a resurrection, the existence of angels, and the immortality of the soul. For them, death was the absolute end. This denial wasn't just a casual opinion; it was a core tenet that shaped their entire worldview and led them to challenge Jesus, whom they saw as a proponent of these 'unproven' ideas. They likely based their stance on a strict interpretation of the Law of Moses, finding no explicit mention of resurrection within it.

The Trap: A Hypothetical Marriage

The Sadducees didn't just disbelieve in the resurrection; they crafted a cunning question to make it sound absurd.

The Sadducees presented Jesus with a complex hypothetical scenario based on the Mosaic Law concerning a brother's duty to marry a deceased relative's childless widow (a practice called the Levirate marriage). They described a situation where seven brothers successively married and died without leaving children, leaving the woman widowed seven times. Their trap was simple: If there's a resurrection, whose wife will this woman be? They believed this scenario, rooted in the Law they claimed to follow, would expose the resurrection as illogical and unworkable. Their goal was to discredit Jesus by making him appear foolish or to force him into an awkward position where he'd have to contradict Moses.
