The king didn't just notice the man lacked any attire, but specifically a wedding garment. This implies the man either refused the special garment provided by the king, or came to the feast having neglected to get one when it was available, showcasing a deliberate disrespect for the host and the occasion. This points to the offense not being mere poverty, but a rejection of the king's provision and the expected standard for his feast.
“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus continues his parable about a royal wedding feast, this time focusing on the attendees' attire. After the king's initial guests refused and others were invited from the streets, he comes to inspect everyone present. He discovers one man conspicuously lacking the proper wedding garment, which was customary for such an important occasion and likely provided by the host.
You're invited to an incredible feast! But what happens if you show up unprepared, even when the host provides everything you need?
This parable highlights a king who throws a lavish wedding feast for his son. He sends out invitations, but when the guests refuse to come, he widens the invitation to include everyone – the poor, the marginalized, the overlooked.
A Wardrobe Provided
The text implies a custom where the host provides special garments for such an occasion. This wasn't just about appearing presentable; it was a sign of honor and belonging. The king, in his immense generosity, ensured everyone invited, especially those from the 'highways and byways,' would have the proper attire. This symbolizes God's abundant provision for all who are called to salvation through Christ.
What does it truly mean to 'put on' the wedding garment? It's far more than just clothing.
The 'wedding garment' isn't merely a physical garment, but a profound spiritual reality. It represents the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
A Righteousness Not Our Own
Commentators suggest this garment signifies the imputed righteousness of Christ – His perfect life and atoning sacrifice credited to us. It also encompasses the internal transformation, the 'Christian temper of mind,' brought about by the Holy Spirit. To 'have' the garment means to be clothed in Christ, to live by faith in Him, and to be made holy. The man without the garment refused to accept or wear this provision, symbolizing a rejection of God's way of salvation and a reliance on one's own insufficient righteousness.
