Even the Son of God experienced basic human needs. What does this teach us about his identity and ours?
Jesus’ hunger in this passage isn't just a narrative detail; it’s a profound statement about his humanity.
True Humanity
As fully God, Jesus was also fully human. This meant experiencing genuine physical needs like hunger, thirst, and fatigue, just like anyone else. The commentators note that he had likely been up early, perhaps praying through the night, and hadn't eaten.
Not a Miraculous Hunger
Some older commentaries wondered if the hunger was a miracle staged to set up the fig tree event. However, scholars rightly point out that this isn't necessary. His hunger simply underscores his real human experience. He wasn't pretending; he was genuinely feeling the pangs of an empty stomach.
The Priority of God's Will
While he felt hunger, Jesus’ ultimate focus was on fulfilling his Father’s will. As he later said, 'My food,' or my sustenance, 'is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work' (John 4:34). His human needs didn't distract him from his divine mission.
