This young man calls Jesus 'Good Master.' Was this just a polite greeting, or did he grasp something deeper?
The young man's use of 'Good Master' (or 'Good Teacher') highlights how people approached religious figures. While he likely meant it as a respectful title, Jesus' response probes deeper.
Jesus' Gentle Correction
Jesus immediately redirects the compliment: 'Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.' This isn't Jesus denying his own goodness or divinity, but rather pointing the young man to the ultimate source of all goodness – God.
The True Source of Goodness
By doing this, Jesus is teaching that true goodness originates from God. Any 'good' a person does, or any good quality they possess, is ultimately a reflection of God's own perfect goodness. Jesus wants the young man to understand that seeking goodness means looking to God as the standard and source.
