When someone wrongs us, our first instinct might be to lash out or withdraw. But Jesus offers a different path, a way to mend relationships and protect the community.
Jesus lays out a clear, step-by-step process for addressing sin within the community, starting with a private conversation. The goal isn't to shame or punish, but to convince and restore.
The Gentle Approach
- Go: Don't wait for the offender to come to you. Take the initiative. This shows humility and a genuine desire for reconciliation.
- Tell him his fault (or 'convict him'): This isn't about airing dirty laundry or making accusations. It's about lovingly confronting the wrong, explaining the impact of their actions, and appealing to their conscience. The original language suggests not just naming the sin, but thoroughly examining it to bring about understanding and change.
- Between you and him alone: Privacy is crucial. This creates a safe space for honesty without public embarrassment, which can often lead to defensiveness rather than repentance.
If this private conversation is successful, the relationship is not only repaired, but strengthened. You have gained your brother back, a far greater treasure than winning an argument.
