Imagine being miles from shore, waves crashing, night falling. Then, you see something unbelievable. What happens when our eyes deceive us, and even Jesus looks like a threat?
The disciples in Matthew 14 were in a terrifying situation. They were caught in a storm on the sea, a place of danger and uncertainty. When Jesus appeared, walking on the water, their first reaction wasn't relief, but terror.
A Familiar Fear
They immediately cried out, "It is a ghost!" This shows how quickly fear can distort our perception. Instead of recognizing the divine power of their Lord, they saw a phantom. This wasn't just a random mistake; it was a deep-seated human tendency to misinterpret the extraordinary, especially when fear is involved.
The Heart's Blindness
As Calvin points out, this moment reveals a blindness that can affect even those closest to Jesus. Despite having witnessed Jesus multiply loaves and feed thousands just the day before, their hearts were not fully open to understanding His power. Fear clouded their minds, preventing them from recognizing the familiar presence of their Master in an unfamiliar form.
