Ever felt Jesus asking you to do something that just doesn't make sense, or that you'd rather not do? This verse shows us the disciples' honest reaction and Jesus' reason for it.
A Command, Not a Suggestion
The word "constrained" here (in the original Greek, it means something like "compelled" or "urged") isn't just a gentle nudge. It suggests the disciples weren't exactly thrilled about Jesus' instruction. Imagine it: they're with Jesus, fresh off witnessing an incredible miracle, and suddenly He tells them to get in a boat and leave Him behind, alone, in a remote area as night falls. It's natural to feel hesitant, perhaps even afraid, to be separated from Him.
Why the Hesitation?
Their reluctance likely stemmed from a few places:
- Attachment: They didn't want to leave their Master, especially in a potentially vulnerable situation.
- Fear: Being alone in a boat on the lake, with the crowds dispersed and Jesus on a mountain, might have seemed daunting.
