Jesus doesn't just say the heart influences speech; he says it overflows. Your words aren't just reflections, but the excess spilling out from what's already filling you up. So, even seemingly small or common speech reveals the true spiritual condition, the things that have truly taken root in your inner self.
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just demonstrated His power by casting out a demon, and the Pharisees' response is to twist His miracle into a work of Satan. In response, Jesus calls them out for their inherent evil and hypocrisy, arguing that their malicious words reveal the true state of their hearts. He emphasizes that just as a good tree produces good fruit, their wicked hearts can only produce wicked words.
Why would Jesus, the embodiment of love and grace, use such harsh language? It wasn't just an outburst – it was a diagnostic tool.
Jesus calls the Pharisees a 'brood of vipers.' This isn't mere name-calling; it's a powerful metaphor rooted in the Old Testament (think of the serpent in Genesis). Vipers are venomous, hidden, and deadly. Jesus uses this imagery to reveal the deeply corrupt and destructive nature of their hearts, which were actively opposing God’s work through him.
This intense language underscores a critical point: Jesus’s words were not driven by personal anger, but by a righteous grief over their spiritual deadness and their deliberate misrepresentation of God’s kingdom. He’s exposing the core problem – their evil nature – which manifests in their destructive words.
Ever wonder why some people just can't seem to say anything positive, even when they try? Jesus gives us the answer.
The second half of the verse, 'For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks,' is the key to understanding Jesus's accusation. It’s a profound statement about the source of our words.

In response to their accusation, Jesus explains that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. He then directly confronts the Pharisees with His powerful words in Matthew 12:34.

barnesMatthew 12:34: "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh."
O generation of vipers! - Christ here applies the argument which he had suggested in the previous verse. They were a wicked race; like poisonous reptiles, with a corrupt and evil nature. They could not be expected to speak good things - that is, to speak favorably of him and his works. As the bad fruit of a tree was the proper effect of its "nature," so w…
