Ever wonder why you sometimes say things you don't mean, or why certain words just 'come out'? Jesus gives us the ultimate clue.
The Heart's Overflow
The second part of the verse, 'For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks,' is the key to understanding Jesus' point. The word 'abundance' here speaks of an overflowing, something that is so full it can't be contained.
Think of it like a cup filled to the brim. Whatever is in the cup will spill out when it’s jostled. Our hearts are like that cup. What we store inside—our true thoughts, desires, beliefs, and attitudes—will eventually spill out through our words and actions.
If our hearts are filled with bitterness, anger, or deceit, that's what will come out. If they are filled with God's love, truth, and goodness, then those are the things that will overflow. Jesus was pointing out that the Pharisees’ hateful words were not random; they were a direct symptom of the corrupt 'treasure' stored in their hearts.
