Jesus is essentially saying, "Be consistent!" He challenges the Pharisees to either admit their accusations are false by acknowledging His good "fruit" (miracles) come from a good source, or if they insist He's evil, then they must logically conclude His good deeds are actually bad.
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just shown his divine power by casting out a demon, yet the Pharisees, unwilling to acknowledge God's work, accuse him of doing so by the power of Satan. Jesus then uses this proverb to challenge their twisted logic: if his works are truly good (healing, casting out demons), then the source of that power must also be good, not evil. He's essentially forcing them to be consistent: either admit his works are good and therefore he's good, or if they insist he's evil, then his works should reflect that, which they clearly do not.
Ever notice how some things just make sense? A juicy apple doesn't come from a thorny bush. Jesus uses this obvious truth to call out hypocrisy.
Jesus is laying down a principle that's as clear as day: the nature of the tree determines the nature of its fruit. You can't logically have a good tree producing rotten apples, or a rotten tree bearing perfect peaches.
He's challenging the religious leaders directly. They're accusing Him of casting out demons by the power of Satan. But Jesus points out the inconsistency: if His 'works' (the fruit) are good – healing the sick, casting out evil – then the source (the 'tree') can't be the devil, who is inherently evil.
It’s a call for logical honesty: either acknowledge the works are good and therefore the source is good, or acknowledge the source is evil and therefore the works must be evil. They couldn't do the latter without condemning themselves, so Jesus forces their hand.
We often think we can hide what's really inside. But Jesus reveals that our words and actions are just the overflow of what's already in our hearts.
This verse isn't just about logical consistency; it points to a deeper reality. The 'tree' represents the inner person – the heart, the core motivations, the spiritual state. The 'fruit' represents the outward expressions: our actions, our words, even our very character.
Jesus is saying that what comes out of us is a direct indicator of what's going on within. You can't fake good fruit from a bad tree, and you can't fake bad fruit from a good tree. The inner reality inevitably manifests outwardly.

For the religious leaders, their harsh judgments and accusations against Jesus were revealing the 'bad fruit' of their own 'bad trees' – their envy, their pride, their spiritual blindness.

Matthew 7:16This verse, also from Matthew, repeats the 'tree is known by its fruit' principle, reinforcing the idea that outward actions are the clearest indicators of inner character.
Romans 11:16This verse uses the imagery of the 'firstfruits' and the 'lump' (dough) to illustrate how the nature of the whole is revealed by its parts, similar to how the fruit reveals the tree.
Galatians 5:22-23Here, the 'fruit of the Spirit' is described, directly contrasting with the idea of bad fruit and showing what good fruit, stemming from a transformed inner nature, looks like.
