John, despite his own conviction about Jesus, sends his disciples to inquire not out of his own doubt, but to strengthen their faith and address their potential confusion. This reveals John’s pastor’s heart; his ultimate goal isn't his own assurance, but the spiritual health and conviction of those he has discipled.
Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus has just finished commissioning his twelve disciples and sending them out to teach and preach across various cities. Meanwhile, John the Baptist, imprisoned by Herod, hears about Jesus' powerful miracles and deeds, prompting him to send his own followers to ask Jesus directly if he is the one they've been waiting for. This exchange immediately follows Jesus' earlier public ministry and his own disciples' initial mission, setting up a critical moment of verification and revelation.
John the Baptist, the fiery herald of the Messiah, found himself silenced and confined. How does suffering and isolation test even the most faithful?
John was not in a comfortable place. Thrown into prison by Herod for his bold preaching, his physical freedom was gone. This wasn't just a temporary setback; he remained imprisoned for a significant period, potentially facing death.
Imagine the scene: You've spent your life preparing the way for the King, you've seen Him come, you've pointed Him out to the world. Now you're locked away, and the world outside seems to be moving on without you. News reaches you of Jesus' amazing works, but the immediate reality for John is confinement and uncertainty. This context is crucial – John wasn't asking a question from a place of leisure, but from the deep well of his prison experience.
Did John the Baptist himself question if Jesus was the Messiah? Or was he acting on behalf of others? The answer might surprise you.
While it might seem like John is asking Jesus, 'Are you the One, or should we wait for someone else?' because he was doubting, the scholars point to a different primary motivation. John had already received clear confirmation from heaven about Jesus' identity (John 1:33). The real issue was his disciples.
They were accustomed to John's austere lifestyle and his strong prophetic message. Seeing Jesus interact with all sorts of people, not adhering to their rigid expectations, and John's own imprisonment, might have caused them to waver. John, ever the shepherd, sent his disciples to Jesus not for his own reassurance, but to solidify faith. He was guiding them to encounter Jesus directly and see the Messianic signs for themselves, so they wouldn't fall away after his own ministry ended.

What kind of 'works' did Jesus perform, and who were they for? The answer reveals God's heart for the forgotten.
The 'works of the Christ' that reached John in prison were not just any deeds; they were specific, powerful signs directly fulfilling ancient prophecies. Jesus doesn't just tell John's disciples who he is; he shows them.
He points to the blind receiving sight, the lame walking, lepers being cleansed, and the deaf hearing. Crucially, he adds that 'the poor have the gospel preached to them.' This wasn't accidental. These were acts of restoration and hope targeted at those society overlooked or deemed unclean. Jesus was demonstrating that the kingdom he heralded wasn't one of political power and earthly might, but of healing, compassion, and salvation offered to the marginalized and suffering. This was the unmistakable signature of the promised Messiah.

John the Baptist, the fiery herald of the Messiah, finds himself imprisoned. Even prophets need confirmation, and John's question from prison isn't about doubt, but about strengthening his disciples' faith in Jesus amidst his own confinement and Jesus's seemingly unconventional ministry.

Jesus tells John's disciples to report back the miracles they witnessed – the blind seeing, lame walking, etc. – and declares John's unique prophetic status.
This passage parallels Matthew's account, showing John the Baptist inquiring about Jesus' identity from prison and Jesus responding by pointing to his miraculous works.
Isaiah 35:5Jesus directly quotes this prophecy when answering John's disciples, demonstrating that his miraculous deeds are the very signs the Old Testament foretold about the Messiah.
Isaiah 61:1This prophetic passage, also quoted by Jesus in his response, further confirms his messianic identity by highlighting his mission to preach good news to the poor.
John 1:33This earlier testimony from John the Baptist about seeing the Spirit descend on Jesus provides important context for why John's current questioning might stem from his disciples' doubts rather than his own.
1 Peter 2:8This verse speaks of Jesus as a 'stone of stumbling' and 'rock of offense,' directly relating to the 'blessed is the one who is not offended in me' statement Jesus makes in response to John's inquiry, showing how the Messiah's path often leads to doubt for those not grounded in faith.
