Jesus shared intimate truths with His disciples, but this wasn't for their ears only. Why would He teach them in 'darkness' if He wanted it broadcast to the world?
Jesus' disciples were given "private instruction" – truths shared in confidence, away from the crowds. Think of it like a master craftsman teaching an apprentice the secrets of the trade. These weren't just casual conversations; they were foundational teachings meant to be deeply understood and internalized.
But notice the command that follows: "say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops." This means the private, sacred teachings were never meant to stay private. The "darkness" and "whispers" were for receiving and understanding, while the "light" and "housetops" were for boldly declaring. The rooftop was a prominent place, visible and audible to the entire community, symbolizing a public declaration.
