Notice how Matthew specifically includes "and his brothers" when mentioning Judah, but omits the brothers of Abraham and Isaac. This highlights that while the Messiah's lineage was strictly through one line, the promises and blessings were meant to extend to all of Abraham's descendants through Jacob's sons.
Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse immediately begins Matthew's genealogy of Jesus, tracing his lineage back through key patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It's crucial to see this as the start of establishing Jesus' royal and covenantal right to be the Messiah, connecting him directly to God's promises made to these foundational figures of Israel. The mention of Judah and his brothers highlights the Messianic lineage within the broader family of Jacob, setting the stage for the unfolding narrative.
Why does Matthew start with Abraham and not Adam? And why are some sons left out of the lineage?
Matthew's genealogy isn't just a list of names; it's a carefully crafted argument. By starting with Abraham, he connects Jesus directly to God's foundational promises. He deliberately skips over Ishmael (Abraham's son by Hagar) and Esau (Isaac's firstborn) to emphasize that Jesus comes through the line specifically chosen by God. The promise was always meant to come through Isaac and then Jacob. When it comes to Jacob, Matthew names Judah and 'his brethren' – all twelve tribes, reminding us that the Messiah, while coming through Judah, is for all of Israel.
Matthew's genealogy and Luke's are different. Why does Matthew focus on Joseph's lineage, even though he wasn't Jesus' biological father?
This is a key puzzle piece! While Luke gives Jesus' natural lineage (through Mary), Matthew provides Jesus' legal lineage through Joseph. Even though Joseph wasn't Jesus' biological father, he was Jesus' adoptive father. In Jewish law, adoption conferred all the rights of a biological son, including inheritance and lineage claims. By tracing Jesus' lineage through Joseph, Matthew proves Jesus' legal right to the throne of David and his status as Abraham's descendant, fulfilling crucial Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah.
