While the verse lists Judah by name, it pointedly includes "and his brothers." This isn't just a stylistic flourish; it emphasizes that the promised blessing ultimately extended to all the tribes of Israel, not just Judah, offering hope to the entire nation.
Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,
English Standard Version (ESV)
This verse marks the beginning of Matthew's genealogy, tracing Jesus' lineage back through key patriarchs like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It sets the stage for proving Jesus' Messianic claims by connecting him to the covenant promises made to Abraham and the royal lineage of David. The mention of Judah and his brothers highlights the hope of the Messiah for all of Israel, not just one specific line.
Ever notice how genealogies can feel like a long list of names? Matthew's is no different, yet every name included, and excluded, matters.
As Matthew begins tracing Jesus' lineage from Abraham, he doesn't list every single descendant. Notice he says, 'Abraham was the father of Isaac,' and 'Isaac the father of Jacob,' but not Abraham's son Ishmael, or Isaac's son Esau.
Why the Exclusions?
If Jesus wasn't Joseph's biological son, why spend so much time detailing Joseph's family tree?
Matthew presents Jesus as the 'son of David, son of Abraham.' While Luke's Gospel gives Mary's genealogy, Matthew focuses on Joseph's. This is crucial for establishing Jesus' legal right to the Davidic throne.
