God's word is precise, but sometimes its meaning unfolds over time. How can a prophecy about someone being 'childless' not contradict their being part of a lineage?
The prophecy in Jeremiah 22:30 states that Jeconiah (also called Coniah or Jechoniah) would be 'childless' and none of his 'seed shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David.'
The Nuance of 'Childless'
Commentators explain that 'childless' here doesn't mean having no offspring at all. Instead, it refers to not having a successor who would prosper on the throne of David.
Continuing the Lineage
Jechoniah did have a son, Shealtiel (or Salathiel), who is listed in Matthew's genealogy. While Jechoniah's direct line did not regain the throne of Judah after the Babylonian exile, the lineage itself continued through Shealtiel and his son Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel was a significant leader in the post-exilic community, playing a key role in rebuilding the Temple.
