We often say 'Jesus Christ' without thinking. What does this powerful name reveal about who Jesus is and what He came to do?
Matthew uses the full title "Jesus Christ." This combination is deeply significant:
Jesus
This was Jesus' given name, meaning "The Lord saves" or "Yahweh is salvation." It points directly to His mission: to save His people from their sins. It’s a constant reminder of His saving work.
Christ
This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word 'Messiah,' meaning 'Anointed One.' In the Old Testament, kings, priests, and sometimes prophets were anointed to set them apart for their special God-given tasks. As the Christ, Jesus is uniquely anointed by God to fulfill all these roles – King, Priest, and Prophet – in a way no one else ever could.
Together, 'Jesus Christ' proclaims that the One who saves is also the divinely appointed, promised King and Messiah. He is God's ultimate answer to Israel's hopes and humanity's deepest needs.
