Jesus declares, 'Whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him.' But what exactly can defile us, according to Jesus?
Jesus makes a radical distinction: external things cannot defile a person spiritually. Food, even if eaten with unwashed hands or of a type forbidden by ritual law, does not enter the 'heart.' It passes through the body and is expelled. Therefore, it doesn't touch the core of a person's being where true purity or impurity resides.
The true source of defilement, Jesus explains shortly after this (in verses 19-23), comes from within. It's the 'wicked thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly' that originate in the heart. These internal corruptions are what truly separate us from God and make us unclean in His sight. Jesus is shifting the focus from dietary laws and ritual purity to the moral and spiritual condition of the human heart.
