Jesus compelled his disciples into the boat, not because they wanted to leave him, but because he knew what was coming—a storm and a night of terror—and he was sending them ahead to face it alone, so he could be alone with his Father. This wasn't just a busy day concluding; it was Jesus strategically positioning himself and his disciples for a divine encounter and a profound lesson.
Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land.
English Standard Version (ESV)
Right after feeding thousands with just a few loaves and fish, Jesus sends his disciples across the Sea of Galilee in a boat toward Bethsaida. He then dismisses the huge crowd, choosing to remain alone on the shore. This sets the stage for Jesus' solitary prayer time and the disciples' subsequent perilous journey.
Jesus tells His disciples to get in the boat and go. But why? Their mission didn't quite make sense at the time. Discover the power of trusting His command even when you don't have all the answers.
The verse says Jesus "constrained" his disciples to get into the boat. This wasn't a gentle suggestion; it was a firm command that likely felt odd to them. They had just experienced an incredible miracle of feeding thousands with a few loaves. Why would Jesus now send them away alone, especially as evening approached, leaving Him behind in a deserted place?
Trusting the Unseen Plan
While His disciples were pushed out onto the sea, Jesus remained behind. What was He doing? This wasn't abandonment, but a deliberate act of seeking divine connection.
