Herod's explanation that Jesus' powers come from John the Baptist's resurrection reveals his own fragmented theology and a deep, unsettling guilt. He projects his fear and the unnatural consequences of his own actions onto Jesus, revealing a man more troubled by his conscience than by spiritual truth.
King Herod heard of it, for Jesus’ name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
As Jesus' fame spreads, King Herod hears about him and, deeply troubled by the miracles he's witnessing, speculates that Jesus must be John the Baptist, whom Herod himself had beheaded. This suspicion arises because Herod had previously imprisoned and feared John for his righteous warnings, and now a powerful figure is emerging with similar impact.
A king's court hears the whispers of the world, but often misses the booming voice of God. Why does spiritual news travel so slowly to those in power?
Herod's initial encounter with Jesus's fame highlights a fascinating disconnect. The text notes that 'his name had become known' (or 'spread abroad'), suggesting a widespread awareness. Yet, for a king, hearing about such a significant figure only after his name was widely known implies a certain insulation. Palaces, though centers of influence, can sometimes be surprisingly detached from the spiritual currents flowing through the populace. Information flow is controlled, and perhaps the spiritual realities of the common people don't readily penetrate the gilded walls.
Herod's explanation for Jesus's power isn't based on divine revelation, but on a guilty conscience and a fearful imagination. What does this reveal about his understanding of God?
Herod's conclusion—that Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead, explaining the miracles—is a profound insight into his own troubled soul. The commentary points out that John performed no miracles during his ministry. Herod's reasoning isn't theological; it's psychological. Because he had fearfully beheaded John, the idea of John returning with 'mighty works' or 'powers' (ἐνεργοῦσιν αἱ δυνάμεις ἐν αὐτῷ) flowing through him was a terrifying explanation for Jesus's apparent power. It's a theology of guilt: if John is back, and powerful, it must be for judgment or vengeance. This wasn't about understanding who Jesus truly was, but about making sense of his own sin and its perceived consequences.

Herod 'heard John gladly,' yet it didn't lead to repentance. What's the difference between enjoying spiritual truth and truly submitting to it?
The broader context reveals Herod's complex relationship with John the Baptist. He 'kept him safe' and 'heard him gladly,' acknowledging John's righteousness. However, this appreciation did not translate into obedience. He was 'much perplexed' by John's message but ultimately yielded to his wife's desire for John's death. This demonstrates a critical point: intellectual agreement or even emotional enjoyment of spiritual truth isn't the same as active submission to God's will. Herod's 'hearing gladly' was a shallow engagement, a temporary comfort that didn't challenge his deeper sin. It's a stark warning against appreciating spiritual things without allowing them to transform our lives.
