Jesus' words to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" are more than just a command; they carry the force of silencing a roaring beast and muzzling its rage. The immediate and complete calm that followed, unlike the gradual settling of natural storms, reveals Jesus’ absolute authority, not just over nature, but over chaos itself.
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus and his disciples set out across the Sea of Galilee as evening falls, leaving a crowd behind. A violent storm quickly brews, filling their boat with water and threatening to sink it. While the disciples panic, Jesus, exhausted from the day's teaching, is sound asleep in the boat.
Have you ever felt like the world is out of control, like a storm raging around you? Jesus spoke words that brought instant peace to the wildest elements.
When Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea, He wasn't just speaking words; He was issuing a divine command to creation itself.
The Authority of the Creator
The disciples were terrified, facing death. But Jesus' power over the storm reveals a deeper truth about overcoming our own fears.
The disciples' reaction to the storm, and then to Jesus' power, shows a crucial shift from paralyzing fear to awe-filled faith.
