The Gospel accounts describe Jesus being brought before the high priest and the council. But did this happen all at once, or were there stages?
While Mark 14:53 states they led Jesus to the high priest where the council assembled, other Gospels and commentaries reveal a more complex process. It seems Jesus was first brought before Annas, the former high priest, for an initial, informal questioning before being taken to Caiaphas, the current high priest, where the formal (though still irregular) Sanhedrin meeting convened.
- Annas's Role: Annas, despite no longer holding the official title, wielded immense influence. Bringing Jesus to him first suggests a desire to get a preliminary assessment and perhaps a predetermined verdict from a key figure.
