The man thought he had kept all the rules. So why did Jesus ask him to do something so radical?
When Jesus lists the commandments, the young man confidently states he's kept them since youth. But Jesus sees something deeper. He loves the man, but also sees the grip his wealth has on him.
The command to "sell everything, give to the poor, and follow me" isn't just about poverty. It's a test to reveal the man's true idol. If someone's greatest treasure is their possessions, they cannot fully follow the One who is the ultimate treasure.
Jesus isn't offering a transactional deal where good deeds earn salvation. Instead, He's exposing the heart's true allegiance. For this man, his wealth was a barrier to truly receiving the gift of eternal life, which comes through radical dependence on God.
