“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
English Standard Version (ESV)
As Malachi's prophecy draws to a close and the era of prophets ends, God instructs His people to recall the Law given through Moses at Horeb. This final charge emphasizes that obedience to this covenant, encompassing all its statutes and judgments, is their path to enduring God's coming judgment and a testament to their faithfulness until the Messiah arrives. The prophet’s concluding words highlight the crucial link between the Old Covenant Law and the impending arrival of a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord.
Malachi's final words are a call to remember the Law. But whose Law is it, really? And why is Moses' role so crucial?
The verse calls the Law 'the law of my servant Moses.' This isn't just to identify the lawgiver, but to highlight that Moses himself was a servant of God. The Law wasn't Moses' invention; it was God's command given through him. This distinction is vital.
