The people of Malachi's time were failing. They questioned God, they doubted His promises, and they even seemed to provoke Him with their actions. Yet, God's response is one of unwavering faithfulness.
The People's Complaints
The context of Malachi's prophecy is a people who are complaining and questioning God's justice and faithfulness (Malachi 2:17). They feel God has abandoned them or that His promises are empty. This is the backdrop against which the announcement of His coming is made.
God's Unwavering Promise
Despite the people's doubts and failures, God reiterates His covenant commitment. He declares, 'Behold, I will send...' and 'the Lord... behold, He is coming.' This isn't a reaction to their complaints, but a declaration of His sovereign plan. God remains true even when His people are not.
A Cause for Hope
This divine fidelity is the ultimate source of hope. Even when the people of God falter, God will not. His promised Messenger, the Lord of the covenant, will come. This assures them that God's purposes will ultimately prevail, fulfilling His promises and bringing about His intended justice and salvation.
